How to Get Your Pictures On Top of Google Image Search
Everybody talks about SEO for Google. But what about Google image search? Why would you want your pictures to come up there first? Well, the answer is simple: you get more visitors from image search. For example web-page that talks about dogs, gets reasonable amount of visitors from those who's searching for dogs or puppies etc. It could be a good idea to promote your products through those pictures as well. At the moment the competitions in this field is average, so being successful could be fast.
Google bots, that are indexing web-pages doesn't see like we do. It means, that they can't look at picture and tell there's a little puppy with a bone. Only people can do that. For bots you have to use optimizing techniques.
It has been a lot of talking about Google image search but it still isn't 100% sure how it's working. Google haven't published their algorithm. But we can surely state:
- The most important is pictures' ALT (alternate text) attribute. If there's appletree on the picture then you should add this to ALT attribute like that: <img src="name-and-location-of-picture.jpg" alt="apple tree" title="apple tree"/>. As you can see in example put the same keyword to the title attribute (it's shows up when user moves cursor on top of picture).
- Name your picture file whit the right name. If there's a dog on the picture then name it dog.jpg
- Use same keywords around the picture that you're optimizing your picture for. Context is very important. For example:
My dog is the best dog <img src="dog.jpg" alt="dog" title="dog" />. But your dog?
- For photos the jpg format is better than gif. Google thinks by default that photos are in jpg and design elements in gif format.
- Web-page title (<title> tag) counts. Your page title has impact on your picture. If you google ,,dog“
, some results my come up just because they have ,,dog
” in title tag. - Put your pictures at the beginning of the web-page. The closer the pictures are to title the more impact it has. Google thinks that pictures at the beginning are more important.
- The higher the quality of pictures the better. Because then more people will notice it and click on it.
- Link to picture with the according keyword. If there's dog on the picture then don't put "click here" for anchor text, better is dog
- Avoid using javascript for opening, showing or serving up bigger version of pictures.
- Register your web-page at Google Webmaster Tools and under the Settings find “
Include my site in Google Image Labeler
” and make a mark in the box. - Tag your pictures with Google Image Labeler.
If you use all of these tactics you should do better than 95% of your competitors.
Good luck with optimizing your pictures!

Microsoft Releases Bing White Paper for Webmasters
Microsoft recently released a new 24 page document titled Bing: New Features Relevant to Webmasters. The PDF file detailed not only interface updates on Bing, Microsoft's own decision search engine, but also provides SEO tips for webmasters and web publishers. In addition, the white paper document contains instructive guidelines on how to create friendly, easy to index websites, as well as ways to make sites look attractive to search engine spiders.
Webmaster's center
Bing's primary function is to bridge users with websites and content across the Internet, a target all search engines aim for. So, what is different from other search engines you may ask? Unlike ordinary search engines, Bing offers categorized choices. Users can select options from the side tool bar, picking more to-the-point selections which, in the end, will reduce the amount of irrelevant sites popping up and saving the Bing users a lot of valuable time.
Long tail strategies
Did you know that more than 300 factors are used in determining categorization and that the categories that appear are entity-dependent? For example: if you search for [baby monitor], the search results may offer you options, such as "shopping", "reviews", "ratings", and "videos", splitting up the search in convenient sections . Microsoft believes that this innovative way of organizing results provides new long tail opportunities for website owners.
Best match
A key objective of Bing is to deliver premium search results and one of the ways the search engine approaches this goal is through a new feature called "Best match." Watch what happens when you conduct a search for a particular brand, such as Adidas, Toys R Us, Campbell's, or Chrysler. The result is amazing. Bing will actually separate the official sites of these brands from the rest of the results, featuring a "Best Match".
Bing Hover Links preview
One of the cool features Bing has to offer is "Bing Hover links". Just hover your mouse over your search results and a window will pop up on the right of it. It will show a summary of that specific query result, as well as and important links related to that result. Webmasters feel this feature increases qualified traffic and helps searcher to find the information they want without having to leave the Search Engine Result Page (SERP). This time-saving feature is truly appreciated by Bing users.
Data Extraction for previews
Through intelligent data extraction, Bing is able to compile useful information in the hover link section. This includes addresses, phone numbers, and email links the search engine has gathered not only from the content of a specific page, but from anywhere else on the Internet.
Flash recognition
Websites saturated with Flash and Silverlight-based content often lack readable Meta data text. Titles and descriptions in the HTML source code are so poor, web crawlers hardly notice them. In an effort to bring these empty-tagged websites out of obscurity, Bing implemented a new technology capable of extracting limited data.
Instant answers queries
Recently upgraded, Bing's "Instant answers" feature now offers even more comprehensive and richer results to informal queries than ever. Type in a short question in the query box and wait to be impressed by the result!
Local listing center
Businesses should take advantage of the opportunity to list their company with Bing's newest addition, the Local Listings Center.
Searchers and Surfers
Searchers who do not know how to start a new or specific search often refine their keywords and phrases halfway through their query. Furthermore, the more information is available, the more people adapt the way they search and surf the Internet. Microsoft has done a number of intense studies to analyze specific search patterns and behaviors. As a result, updates and additions were initiated. Microsoft's goal is to improve searcher satisfaction by delivering faster, more accurate and complete results. It is a tough objective that, perhaps, is closer in reach than you think.

Does Google PageRank Count Anymore?
Being a full-time SEM (Search Engine Marketer) I have been conditioned like Pavlov's dog (not a pretty picture) to jump every time Google twitches. Lately Google has been doing a lot of twitching.
Specifically, the rather startling news from Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Susan Moskwa that Google has ditched PageRank from Webmaster Tools.
"We've been telling people for a long time that they shouldn't focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it's the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true," states Moskwa. "We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it." (Source: WebProNews)
Now, for SEO reasons or for ranking in Google's index, PageRank has long been eunuchified by Google. However, even missing a few dangling bits, history has shown us, eunuchs still wheel tremendous power. PageRank is no different.
Regardless of what Google wants to happen, PageRank is still extremely important to anyone marketing on the web, especially if you're selling SEO services or operating a web business. Try selling SEO services when that little green bar on your site is pointing to PR0 or worst yet, pointing to a solid gray bar.
Obtaining a high PR7 or PR8 simply means more business and revenues... regardless of how Google is or is not using PageRank. People know how to count and they learned long ago, a ten is a lot more than a big fat zero.
Placed against a PR1 site, a PR8 will win more respect in the eyes of potential clients and can produce enormous profits for the site owner and we won't even mention the still widely practiced habit of selling links, which Google is desperately trying to stop. Total and full elimination of PageRank would be an honest start, but it will still be an uphill, if not an unwinnable battle, for Google to fully eliminate link selling.
Even with my modest sites, I have turned down a small fortune by not selling text links on any of my sites. When I had a PR6 site instead of a PR4 - those link requests were nearly doubled. So one can easily understand Google's position and the need to downplay PageRank, if they want to put even a small dent in all this link selling and buying, which is still running rampant on today's web.
PageRank is Google's creation, and unless they remove it fully from their system and the Google toolbar, then PageRank still Counts. Actually, in the whole scheme of marketing your website on the net, PageRank counts big time. And in more ways than one.
There are several reasons why you shouldn't count PageRank out.
For years Google has been downplaying the importance of PageRank and states it's only one of about 200 ranking factors which determine how Google ranks its index for keywords. Obtaining top organic rankings for popular lucrative keywords in Google simply means money in the bank. Actually, even a movement of only one or two places on those first page SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) can make a major difference to any online marketer's bottom line.
Now while you can have a lower PR number and still rank above other higher PR pages for your chosen keywords, I have even had many times when my PR drops but my actual SERPs rankings in Google goes up, mainly due to building related relevant backlinks. So PageRank counts little towards your keyword rankings, but it can't be totally dismissed.
Mainly because, even if PR is just one ranking factor, in close competitive keyword battles (I am presently fighting tooth and nail for some very choice keywords) just one ranking factor such as high PR can make the difference of whether or not you get to the top spot. Big dogs are still jumping and for those of us who know how to count, getting a number one spot in Google makes all the difference in the world.
Not only because Google controls roughly 80% of all search engine traffic, but more importantly Google has established unmatched credibility and brand recognition in the eyes of potential customers visiting your site. Web users trust Google. Web users look to Google for guidance and direction. Web users believe what Google is telling them. In the online world, rightly or wrongly, perception is everything.
As an online marketer, I am completely amazed each day at the marketing power Google now commands with web surfers and with the general population. Google is king of online search and no other search engine even comes close to Google.
PageRank is Google's ranking system, and in the eyes of those who notice these things, it still wields tremendous influence and power. By default, PageRank is Google's opinion of your site, and web users can count (at least to 10) and if Google believes people are still not counting when it comes to PageRank, then they are fully mistaken.

10 CSS Tips from a Professional CSS Front-End Architect
I have been working with web standards based design for many years now and I see many rookie mistakes. When newbies get started with CSS/XHTML based web design, most of their work is focused on just getting the page to look like the Photoshop comp. While this translation is important to keep the client happy, considerable thought process should be involved in creating the semantic markup and marrying that with CSS. CSS is not a collection of hacks to get the browsers to bend to your will. Style sheeting is more of an art form. The difference between choosing inline elements and background selectors is a delicate procedure. How will I manipulate the structure? What is the client brand and how does this work into my markup? Simply thinking through your process before starting each project will save you headaches as the site grows.
1. The client's brand is important.
To exemplify the brand with visual queues is key. Keeping the logo whole is an example. Now that traditional table based slicing and dicing is gone, we can keep the integrity of our presentational inline images.
2. Keep content images whole.
Images that reside in the content flow should be allowed stability in that structure. This includes the logo or any supporting images in the document. I really enjoy right clicking an image, especially a logo, and receiving a nice whole transparent PNG. Deciding up front is detrimental to keeping the integrity of the design and brand. Even the markup. This may not matter to your client but it matters to your colleges or future employees who might edit your documents.
How is this done. Take advantage of transparent PNG's. Since the birth of IE 7 and it's fluent injection in the industry, currently 25% of the market, we can now take full advantage of transparent PNG's*.
*What about IE 6? Their are many techniques to relieve IE6 of it's transparency bug.
Think of your composition as Photoshop layers. Keeping your images whole allow you to layer your images using z-indexing. Don't forget that the Trident engine(IE) thinks the the stacking order starts at 0. The Gecko engine starts at 1. Carefully organizing your stacking order allows you to keep track of elemental layering.
3. Go with the flow.
A designer knows what's best for the client and the user and will make specific decisions about where structure shall live, where the logo will be, where the primary call to action will live, etc. If the logo rests in the top left corner of the comp, it should also live in the top of the markup. Before starting, review the composition and decide what images will rest in the presentational CSS and what images will rest in the inline with in the document. Obviously if the composition shows the logo at the bottom it should still rest at the top of the document. Try and keep it close to what the designer or project team intended.
4. Complex layouts are made of simple sections.
Consider the value of each section of the site when dealing with complex layouts. For example when presented with a 3 column comp, determine the value of each section. Should navigation rest underneath the logo? Does content take reign over all other elements? Taking time before you start will save you a lot of headaches down the road. Here is an example of sectional ordering with three column layout:
- Logo/Branding
- Navigation (vertical or horizontal)
- Main Content
- Secondary Content (sidebar-two or supplemental content)
- Promotional Items (ads or internal promos)
- Footer/Copyright
5. Keep containers to a minimum.
Save your document from structural bloat. New developers will use many div's similar to table cells to achieve layout. Take advantage of the many structural elements to achieve layout. Do not add more div's. Consider all options before adding additional wrappers (div's) to achieve an effect when using a little nifty CSS can get you that same desired effect.
6. Use the @import rule to organize your CSS.
Not only will the @import rule save you from an undesired effect with legacy browsers such as IE4, IE5 MAC and Netscape 4 (a few still exist!) it is easier to maintain. Since you carefully organized your document you will not be ashamed of your un-styled markup.
7. Organizing your CSS helps with future maintainability of the site.
Start with a master style sheet. Within this style sheet import your reset.css, global.css, flash.css(if needed) and structure.css and on occasion a typography style sheet.
Here is an example of a “master” style sheet and how it is embedded in the document:
@import url("reset.css");@import url("global.css");
@import url("flash.css");
@import url("structure.css");
<style type="text/css" media="Screen"> /*\*/@import url("css/master.css");/**/ </style>*
*Notice the capitalization in the media attribute. Capitalizing “Screen” will save you headaches with IE on Windows Mobile 5. Currently, I use a Plam Treo to access all my mobile online content. (Yes, I will be switching to an iPhone when available.) The Treo's OS is Windows Media 5. The browser is IE. Are you thinking the same thing as me? Yes, another IE browser to work with and eventually hack. And this one also has bugs. The biggest rendering problem is the mergence of presentational and handheld style sheets. You can imagine the disaster that creates. But their is a fix. If you capitalize the “S” in screen IE will skip the presentational CSS documents and render only the desired handheld mobile style sheet.
8. Organize your alt CSS documents.
What about devices that do not rely on CSS style sheets? Since your structural markup is already organized the visitor should have a pleasant experience with the site. On any device with style sheets or not.
Alternative documents such as arual, print and handheld can be grouped together in a alternative directory. As you can see I place these alternative style sheets in a directory called “alt”.
Use the link tag for other style sheets as so:
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="print and (min-width: 25cm)" href="css/alt/print.css" /><link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="handheld" href="css/alt/handheld.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="aural" href="css/alt/aural.css" />
Do the exact with IE bugs style sheets. Organize them in to an “iebugs” directory.
Use conditional comments to include your IE bugs CSS:
<!--[if lte IE 6 ]>
<code><link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/iebugs/ie6.css" />
<![endif]-->
<!--[if IE 7 ]>
<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="css/iebugs/ie7.css" />
<![endif]-->
9. Hook, line, and sinker.
Once you have your CSS and sections in place start considering where your selector “hooks” will live by using structural hooks in your mark up. This is your saving grace for future editing and maintenance of the site. This will also give you strength in your document.
10. Body tag ID.
In most cases placing an ID in the body tag will allow you manipulate CSS presentational items and markup elements by page by page basis. This also will cut down the amount templatatization (is that a word?). Not only will you be able to organize your sections you will be able to create multiple CSS presentations with out changing your markup from template to template or page to page.
For example if a 3 column layout requires being reordered from page to page. Such as columns switching places. This is easily achievable with the power of specificity and the CSS cascade. Simply adding an ID to the body will allow you to change anything inside and outside the document flow. This is increasingly useful when dealing with pages in CMS systems such as Wordpress.
That's it. There is so much more to cover, but these simple techniques will get you off to a great start. Until then…
Happy Stylesheeting!
